How to Make DIY E-Juice: A Beginners Guide

There are many flavours of vape juice, but sometimes that's just not enough. Sometimes they’re just too expensive, sometimes we get dissatisfied with the lack of variety or we want something that's uniquely us. While the vaping community is about gathering around a revered hobby it's also about making our vapes represent our individuality and uniqueness as a person. One way we can do this is with custom flavours. Here you'll find some starter tips and information to make DIY e-juice. Here is our overview of How to Make DIY E-Juice and an introduction to DIY E-Liquid Mixing.

First you’ll need gear to start yourself off. For anyone just starting to DIY it will be in your interest to find a DIY kit. It should supply you with most of the basic tools and perhaps some flavouring. It may be in your interest to get flavouring specifically for vaping but some use food flavourings with very little negative effect like vanilla. You’ll need a lot of parts that can be hard to fashion at home so you may be interested in buying containers and any other parts you may need before starting.

When working with chemicals safety is very important especially if you're working with nicotine.  While it may seem like a trip back to high school you may want to grab a pair of safety goggles, rubber gloves and a safety apron when making your own e-juice. You don't want hurt yourself before getting to try what you've made. This is especially important if you’re working with high concentration liquid nicotine. Liquid nicotine is sold in various concentrations and higher concentration solutions pose more risk while brewing new flavours than others. While nicotine is poisonous and we all know it liquid nicotine takes this a step further. Liquid nicotine can have toxic effects upon contact with skin so the gloves are extremely important for safety should you choose to use liquid nicotine. Should you come into contact or ingest liquid nicotine make sure to call your region’s poison control or emergency services.

With all forms of crafting, brewing etc. one of the most important questions to answer is what are the ingredients? The main ingredients are PG and VG or Propylene Glycol and Vegetable Glycerin respectively with the obvious addition of water and finally this choice being optional and potentially dangerous for any brewers; nicotine. The next ingredients are more customizable as they will focus on the flavourings. While it may seem fun to mix and match like a mad scientist it may be in your best interests to look up recipes and buy supplies specifically for DIY e-juice or to look up a recipe.

Once you’ve got your safety supplies and ingredients together it’s time to start cooking. You’ll need to find a safe, clean area with no children, animals or generally unprepared people.

You’ll want to have a lot of measurements (or a premade recipe) for your flavours and key ingredients (nicotine VG, PG). From here it’s best to practice recipes until you feel experienced enough to make your own recipes.

From here it’s best to work your way up in experience and taste to get closer to what you want to brew. Buying vape juice is expensive and brewing it yourself may be cheaper but always remember to read the ingredients and watch for your health. Have fun and stay safe!
